The Governance Committee serves as an advisory committee dedicated to upholding the AALA’s organizational integrity through strategic oversight and guidance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and cultivating leaders for committee and Board service
  • Recruiting and nominating Board candidates
  • Ensuring adherence to AALA Bylaws and Best Practices
  • Providing policy recommendations
  • Orienting new Board members
  • Auditing Board health and compliance
  • Assessing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives
  • Addressing grievances

Through these efforts, the Governance Committee promotes effective governance, fosters active Board member engagement, ensures transparency between the Board and membership, recognizes and challenges the historically exclusive nature of publishing, and supports the organization’s commitment to anti-racism. It ensures the Board fulfills its responsibilities as a steward of the organization’s assets, reputation, financial and human resources, and mission.
